After this dark, brooding painting, Mondrian returned to the regular framework of the linear grid – this time filling it with colour. There are many examples of this work such as Composition with Light Colour Planes with Grey Contours (1919). Mondrian’s colourful grid painting is completely abstract and is therefore far more radical than any Cubist painting had ever been, but it still fulfils the conditions of being a painting in the old sense.
